A producer of AgriPro® seed varieties from Syngenta Cereals, Joe Peeper is optimistic about this year’s wheat crop. Joe and his wife, Mary Jo, have grown wheat for more than 25 years on what was once Mary Jo’s great-grandparents’ farm near Enid, Okla.
Joe is a producer/dealer for AgriPro seed varieties from Syngenta Cereals, but also uses other seed varieties in his fields. His dominant crop is dryland hard red winter seed wheat, but he rotates with sesame. Joe has 450 of his own wheat acres and contracts another 300 to 500 with other growers in the area.
To ensure he produces healthy wheat, Joe treats his seeds with Dividend Extreme® fungicide seed treatment and applies Tilt® fungicide to his crop. Joe also relies on conventional tillage practices in all his wheat fields except when rotating with sesame.
Joe and Mary Jo are recipients of several awards, including the 2009 Oklahoma Farm Bureau Family Farm of the Year award and the 2009 Premier Seed Dealer award from the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association. Joe also collects antique tractors, an interest sparked by his father, who was a Case dealer.
Joe and Mary Jo aren’t the only family members passionate about agriculture. Their son, Danny, is involved in developing a market for sesame, and Joe’s brother, Tom, is a plant and soil scientist at Oklahoma State University.
